What kind of “hook” can we use to recruit districts and schools to implement the AZSPDG when Arizona does not mandate districts or schools to follow any specific programs or processes? All educational decisions are under local control.

Utilizing SPDG Resources to Support ESSA

ESSA identifies that Districts are responsible for supporting schools in need of targeted support.  Students with disabilities will possibly perform at the same level as the lowest performing schools (based on index of indicators), with the number of schools identified in need of targeted support estimated at 300.  The SPDG anticipates that districts will be seeking support from the Department in identifying evidenced based practices that will accelerate learning for students with disabilities.  What would be the appropriate role of the SPDG in addressing this challenge?

Scaffolding For All Learners/Users Through Video

We all know that the reports that we generate or written materials we prepare for stakeholders are not consumed to the same degree across all stakeholders. This is true for both programmers serving communities and also evaluators serving programmers. We’ve discovered a simple way to prepare a companion video for our auditory learner, to accompany each report and PowerPoint that we deliver. In this session we’ll invite others to share ideas for other types of learners as well, and participants will leave with those resources in tow, as well as a thirty-minute hands on experience crafting their own video companion to a report.

Aligning Varied Technical Assistance Models to Create a Unified Framework

The Indiana SPDG (Indiana Center for Teacher Quality-ICTQ) is one of seven state resource centers provding technical assistance and support to the field. Currently, ICTQ is following the SISEP Implementation Science framework, and one other center is using the SWIFT process. Across Centers there is no uniform or unified TA model, with most training and technical assistance delivered in a one-time, one off training workshop.

Collaboration with the Uninterested or Unwilling?

State Departments of Education are complex systems that often involve programs based on differing educational philosophies and practices. A challenge we face is trying to align initiative with those who represent and support different perspectives.  We know this will be better for our consumers, but it isn’t always easy to do.

Transitioning from SPDG to SPDG:  Singing the Same Tune but Adding New Instruments.

As we come to the end if our first five-year Check & Connect initiative, it has become clear how far we have come yet how far we must go. In the next SPDG, we will be expanding the systems coaching model to further develop and strengthen district sustainability and help districts own the initiative rather than relying upon the SPDG for coaching, supports, and leadership.  How have other SPDG’s helped districts wean off SPDG supports and sustain the work successfully?  What kinds of supports have been left in place?  Have they been working?  What are the red flag areas to be aware of?

Flying While Building – How and When to Move Forward

Oregon has established coherence as an Agency goal. The MTSS Training Team is charged with implementing the SPDG and serves as a key partner to the Cross Office Team that is charged with developing agency-wide processes. Currently the MTSS Training Team is working on developing a coherent definition of MTSS, a coaching scope and sequence for training, and outlining structures that will lead the work of LEAs forward through collaboratively building understanding, buy-in, and vision across departments at the State level. We have a draft definition, but are still trying to reach consensus. How and when do we move forward without jeopardizing the momentum?

Kentucky’s Capacity to use Implementation Science and Scale-up the SPDG

Part of Kentucky’s SPDG is focused on developing systems coaches using Implementation Science. Kentucky’s current State Transformation Specialists will replicate the I-do, we-do, you-do process to develop the capacity of Kentucky Systems Coaches. These state level coaches, in turn, develop the capacity of a cohort of district systems coaches. The district coaches, in turn, support schools effective use of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), literacy, math, behavior. How do two State Transformation Specialists currently using Implementation Science to implement the State Systemic Improvement Plan (a) continue to support and scale-up the SSIP, and (b) build the capacity of systems coaches to support the implementation of the SPDG?

Liberating Student Outcome Data

Using data to get to improved student outcomes is a lofty outcome in itself. SPDG evaluators frequently struggle to access formative and/or summative data to demonstrate impacts on student outcomes. This session will provide an opportunity to share and learn strategies used to collect student outcome data so that those data can be used to inform professional learning and to market successes.
