Dr. Mike Schmoker is a former administrator, English teacher and football coach. He has written five books and dozens of articles for educational journals and newspapers, TIME magazine and as a regular columnist for Phi Delta Kappan. Dr. Schmoker is the recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of Secondary School Principals for his research, publications and presentations. He has keynoted at hundreds of state, national and international events and has consulted for school districts and state and provincial education departments throughout the US, Canada, Australia and the kingdom of Jordan. He now lives in Tempe, Arizona with his wife Cheryl.
Jess Yates is the Assistant Director of Special Education in Maine’s Regional School Unit #13. She received her B.A. in Environmental Studies and History from Bowdoin College, her M.S. in Marine Policy from the University of Maine, and her C.A.S. in Educational Leadership with a concentration in special education from the University of Southern Maine. Prior to joining RSU#13, Jess worked as a Day Treatment teacher for 7th and 8th grade students with emotional disabilities at Medomak Middle School. It was in this role that she confirmed her dedication to programming for exceptional populations. Jess subsequently obtained the position of the Assistant Director of Special Services in Maine School Administrative District #17, where she worked with administrators and staff to integrate the Common Core State Standards into special education practices. She continued these efforts upon joining RSU#13 and is currently working with the district’s educators to help them successfully create and implement IEPs aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Jess is an active member of the Maine Department of Education’s SPDG Goal 3 Implementation Team, and has recently presented components of her work at the Maine Special Education Director’s Academy, the OSEP conference in Washington, D.C., and in multiple regions around the state. Jess resides in Mid-Coast Maine with her daughter, Sophie.

This webinar will feature two national technical assistance experts who will present guidelines to improve classroom performance of students in general education settings, and development of standards-based IEPs aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Jessica Yates, an Assistant Director of Special Education in Maine’s Regional School Unit #13, and Mike Schmoker, former teacher and administrator, and recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of Secondary School Principals for his research, publications and presentations. Both presentations are designed to support states in inclusion of all students in the roll out of the new College and Career Ready Standards.
