Purpose
The goal of this project is to provide professional development that
targets high-need schools and their feeder schools, creating a systemic,
tiered approach to addressing the needs of teachers, staff,
administrators, and families in improving outcomes for students with
disabilities.
Method
Activities of this project include: (a) providing intensive assistance
to the highest-need schools (Tier 1) determined by gaps in achievement
and graduation between students with disabilities and their nondisabled
peers, by poverty, and by high percentages of minority
enrollment; (b) targeting particular data-driven needs for Tier 2
schools; (c) setting up Tier 3 schools as demonstration sites for the
State; (d) partnering with various agencies, including the South
Carolina Department of Social Services and four institutions of higher
education; and (e) providing a coherent, sustainable, research-based
professional development program that includes intensive coaching,
virtual professional learning communities, graduate coursework, online
modules and demonstration sites, and direct
training in research-based effective strategies.
